CONCORD, N.H. -

Concord Trailways has changed its name, doing business now as Concord Coach Lines.

The name change, which became effective on Jan. 1., signifies an end to the motor coach transportation company’s 27-year affiliation with the Trailways Transportation System.

The company’s bus schedules and services will remain the same.

Concord Coach Lines joined the Trailways system in 1980 in an effort to improve motor coach connections for its passengers traveling with other carriers to points beyond Boston.

The company, headquartered in Concord, N.H., began operating in 1967. Concord Coach Lines has offered scheduled motor coach services from cities throughout New Hampshire to Boston since 1979, when it began doing business under the name to which it is returning.

“We’ve enjoyed our relationship with Trailways and the increased interline connectivity that relationship has established for our customers over the years,” said Harry Blunt, Jr., owner and president of the company.

The current system of interlining used by Concord Coach Lines – a system in which passengers can purchase one bus ticket for use with multiple carriers in reaching destinations nationwide – remains in place.

Blunt said the benefits of maintaining membership in Trailways have diminished over recent years, noting that Peter Pan Bus Lines dropped its affiliation with the organization about a year ago.

The Trailways Transportation System was founded in 1936 as a means for independent motor coach carriers to gain a fair exchange for interline passenger business and to compete with the Greyhound Corp.

In New Hampshire, Concord Coach Lines operates transportation centers in Concord and Manchester.

In 1992, the company expanded to Maine, and offers express motor coach service from Bangor and Portland to Boston.

Service along Route 1 in Maine between Searsport and Brunswick also connects travelers to the Bangor-Portland-Boston corridor.

Concord Coach Lines and its subsidiaries, Dartmouth Transportation Co. in Lebanon  and Boston Express Bus in Nashua, carry more than 1 million passengers annually in Northern New England.
